How Heartbreak, Betrayals, Manipulation and Deception Affects the Nervous System of an Empath and Ultimately Your Health and Wellbeing
Written by Tammy Miller

Empaths have sensitive nervous systems.
We feel the energy in the room and sense the emotions of others.
We feel it in our bodies…through our nervous system.
Our nervous system functions much like an antenna - constantly picking up signals, information and energy, then processing through the body. Empaths absorb the tension in a room, feel conflict more intensely and sense unspoken emotions and thoughts, often without even realising it.
1. The Empath–Narcissist Energy Dynamic
I’m not here to label or typecast anyone, but for the sake of understanding certain behavioural patterns, it can be helpful to explore the empath–narcissist dynamic. Sometimes naming a pattern helps us understand the energetic cycle we may be caught up in. You may recognise yourself somewhere within it, remembering that narcissistic traits exist on a wide spectrum.
Personally, I prefer to speak about the empath/narcissist dynamic through the language of energy, because it helps empaths understand what they feel but cannot always explain.
This isn’t about judging or blaming, it’s about bringing awareness to how certain behaviours impact sensitive nervous systems and how energy exchanges can become unbalanced.
People with narcissistic traits - or those who are chronically pessimistic, controlling or manipulative - often operate from a lack of internal regulation. They find it hard to generate their own sense of wellbeing, so they unconsciously (or consciously) take energy from others.
Empaths become their favourite source of energy because they are:
loving and open
kind and compassionate
forgiving
emotionally generous
have a positive outlook on life
2. How To Detect a Narcissist?
Sometimes it’s blatantly obvious and other times it can be harder to detect. Individuals that have narcissists traits may come across as charming and attentive at first. But underneath, they are masking resentment, envy, greed, entitlement or insecurity and a deep fear of facing themselves.
To them, it’s not about what they can give you, but about what you can give them. It’s transactional to them and most often than not, they have a hidden agenda and often it is about control. They siphon your positive loving energy because it temporarily fills their internal emptiness.
This is why you may feel when you are around them:
drained
heavy
confused
anxious
disconnected from yourself
It’s not “in your head.” It’s an energetic exchange and a physiological response.
3. Emotional Vampires and Energetic Drain
“Emotional vampires” is a term used to describe people who feed off the emotional energy of others. They may not realise they are doing it, but the impact is real.
Signs you are being energetically drained:
you feel tired after interacting with them
you lose confidence or clarity
you feel guilty for things you didn’t do
you question your intuition
you feel emotionally foggy or confused
your body feels heavy or tense
you feel depressed afterwards
you feel responsible for their happiness
4. Energetic cords: The Emotional Attachment You Can’t See But Feel
Even when someone is no longer physically in your life, they can still drain your energy through energetic cords. These cords form through repeated interactions, unresolved pain and every moment you think or speak about that person. Each thought creates an energetic attachment - and if they are thinking or talking about you, they are forming a cord with you as well.
These energetic cords can transmit:
thoughts
emotional projections
longing
resentment
energetic pull
This is why, when you think of them, when you reminisce about the past or remember how you felt around them - you can still sense their presence even after separation. You remain energetically connected to them.
5. The Heartbreak Pain Loop: How Empaths Get Stuck
When someone you care about, repeatedly breaks your trust, betrays you, withholds love, manipulates you, treats you with disrespect or is projecting harm and ill intent towards you, empaths can become trapped in an emotional pain loop.
This betrayal-heartbreak loop causes repeated:
Shock and hurt
Confusion
Self-blame
Self-pity
Emotional exhaustion
Hope for change
Empaths often try to understand this narcissistic behaviour and make excuses for them like:
“They are hurting.”
“They didn’t mean it.”
“They had a hard childhood.”
“They are stressed.”
“They don’t know how to show love.”
“They don’t know how to express themselves.”
“That’s just how they are.”
This compassion becomes a trap when the narcissistic person has no intention of changing.
Empaths often spend years trying to make sense of behaviour that wounds them. They excuse it, rationalise it and try to heal it with love. Over time, this becomes a repetitive loop - a wheel turning endlessly. Eventually, realising they are stuck in a heartbreak cycle. Breaking free from that cycle takes awareness and forming new habits, beliefs and cognitive measures.
Empaths become the enablers by allowing toxic behaviour and cycles to continue by staying, returning, forgiving and hoping narcissists will self-reflect and change.
Empaths often become the “safe target” or the scapegoat. The one who absorbs the pain others refuse to face and carries the blame for the narcissist’s unhappiness and unresolved struggles.
6. Healing from Heartbreak and Betrayal — My Soul Lesson
For years, I found myself caught in painful betrayal–heartbreak loops with people I loved. It was a cycle I was stuck in due to my own beliefs and conditioning.
My presence seemed to irritate them so deeply and I couldn’t understand why. It left me confused, doubting myself, questioning my own perception. If I named it or called it out, I was met with anger, denial or accusations that twisted everything back onto me.
Still, every part of my body, my intuition, my nervous system - could sense the deception, manipulation, envy and contempt. But whenever I challenged it, they denied it. I was being played by the very people I thought cared about me.
My love and loyalty blinded me to what was actually happening. I mistakenly believed that because I wanted the best for them and genuinely wanted them to be happy, they would want the same for me. I was naively mistaken - and it hurt every single time. What made it even more painful was witnessing the pleasure they took in my emotional suffering. I would often catch a glimpse of that Cheshire‑cat grin they couldn’t hide, and each time, it sent me straight back into heartbreak.
I forgave over and over, because I could see their pain and believed they were simply unhealed. Their lashing out felt unfair, especially when I tried to help them gain awareness of their own patterns. They didn’t want to see it. They didn’t want to know. And for a long time, I was the wounded healer - carrying the weight of their wounds while ignoring my own.
My healing began when I finally saw the pattern clearly. Years of heartbreak. Years of betrayal. Years of playing the victim and trying to understand why people I cared for - treated me so poorly. I threw myself many pity parties…me, myself and I.
I kept asking myself:
What wasn’t I seeing?
What wasn’t I understanding?
Why hasn’t this healed?
Why was I stuck in this pattern?
Then I went through another spiritual awakening – and I gained clarity and insight that might seem obvious to others, but for me, it was something I had struggled with my entire life. I had always believed that God wanted me to forgive everyone who had ever harmed me. So, I did. I found it in my heart to forgive them. I believed that if I loved enough, supported enough or stayed patient enough, I could heal these situations. But despite my forgiveness, these people continued to mistreat me.
I used to cry out to God, asking:
“What am I supposed to do?”
“What lesson am I not understanding?”
“Why can’t I heal this?”
I felt like such a failure - as though my love should have been enough to heal the situation. My belief was that love could heal anything.
But I just couldn’t bear it anymore, and it wasn’t from lack of trying…I had spent decades of self-reflecting and committed to the inner healing work.
What I didn’t realise was, God did want me to forgive. Not to keep allowing harmful behaviour, but so I would no longer carry the pain. The deeper lesson was to forgive and to put healthy boundaries in place without guilt.
This was always difficult for me, because I never wanted anyone to feel abandoned. And this is exactly what narcissistic individuals rely on. They play on an empath’s compassion, knowing that eventually, the empath will forgive them… and return.
I realised:
I cannot help people who refuse to help themselves
I will no longer sacrifice my wellbeing to keep someone else comfortable
I will not allow emotional or energetic access to people who harm me anymore
I am responsible for protecting myself
7. The Universal Law of Cause & Effect — Projection, Control and Karma
For people who operate from control, manipulation or emotional avoidance, this dynamic becomes a game. They mistreat you, diminish you and show you disrespect, knowing how loving, forgiving and open‑hearted you are. They count on your return. You become a reliable source of energy - a place where they can avoid doing any inner work on themselves.
They use power and control to get their needs met, and when those needs aren’t met, they project their discomfort onto you. Eventually, you reflect their behaviour back to them like a mirror and they do not like what they see. It makes them deeply uncomfortable.
What they fail to understand is that every choice made in the shadows - every lie, every act of deception, every moment of aggression or manipulation - is ultimately experienced by the one who created it. If not in this lifetime, then in another. This is karma. We are here to clear karma, not accumulate more. It is the universal law of cause and effect.
We are here to experience being human, connection, to learn soul lessons, to express our emotions in a balanced and tempered way. To heal ourselves. To integrate our shadow self/ego, to find balance. To treat others with kindness and respect, as every soul deserves.
Everything is recorded in the Akashic Records, your soul’s journey, your consciousness, your essence. The Universe/God/Source sees and knows all: every thought, every action, every behaviour and the intention behind it. Nothing is hidden. Nothing is escaped. We all eventually feel and balance out what we send out into the world. This is how the Universe works. What you think, feel and speak carries a frequency and that frequency returns to you.
It is up to each of us to change our own thoughts, emotions and behaviours and to take accountability for everything we create.
8. The Body Keeps Score. The Physiological Impact of Long‑Term Emotional Stress
When we experience betrayal, manipulation, deception or ongoing conflict, the body interprets it as danger. The brain releases stress hormones — cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline — preparing us for:
Fight (defend yourself)
Flight (escape)
Freeze (shut down)
Fawn (appease to stay safe)
Empaths often default to freeze and fawn, because we feel responsible for maintaining harmony and peace. Absorbing the emotional load, carrying the tension and internalise the conflict.
Over time, this constant activation of the stress response affects:
adrenal function
hormonal balance
sleep cycles
digestion
immune health
mood regulation
cognitive clarity
And it can show up physically as:
anxiety
exhaustion
brain fog
hormonal imbalances
PMS or cycle changes
weight fluctuations
depression
adrenal fatigue
chronic tension
gut issues
Your nervous system is not “too sensitive.” It is responding exactly as it should to environments that overwhelm it. We just need to learn how to protect and regulate our nervous systems, our energy field.
9. The Physiological Impact of Long-Term Emotional Stress
So what does years of heartbreak and being around toxic people do to our bodies? Living in a state of emotional conflict or manipulation keeps the nervous system in survival mode. Continuous fight or flight mode, and being hypervigilant can have long term effects on your:
Adrenals - Constant cortisol release leads to adrenal fatigue, exhaustion and burnout.
Hormones – Cortisol, the stress hormone disrupts:
oestrogen
progesterone
testosterone
DHEA
This can cause:
PMS
irregular cycles
weight gain or loss
mood swings
sleep issues
low libido
Brain Chemistry - Chronic stress alters:
serotonin
dopamine
GABA
norepinephrine
This contributes to:
anxiety
depression
emotional numbness
difficulty concentrating
memory issues
Nervous System
Hypervigilance becomes your baseline. Your body is always bracing for the next emotional blow, the next put down, the next criticism, the cruel intent. Years and years of stress can take a toll on the nervous system.
10. The link between the Chakras and Physical Health conditions
From a spiritual and energetic perspective, the body often reflects where emotional pain has been stored. Heartbreak and grief can settle in the heart chakra; feeling silenced or unable to express your truth can affect the throat chakra with throat and thyroid issues.
Many people who experience back pain can be linked with feeling unsupported in life. Menstrual and reproductive challenges may indicate sexual mistreatment or trauma. Not always, but there is an emotional link to this area with intimate relationships. It can also be due to stress and hormonal imbalance.
In my own health journey, I developed breast cancer - an experience that sits directly in the heart space. And when I look back and self-reflect, it makes sense to me on a soul level. I had lived in continual heartbreak. Love was withheld from me throughout my life and the deeper lesson was learning self‑love and self‑worth.
These patterns don’t replace medical understanding, and sometimes there are physical reasons for these conditions, I’m simply offering another layer of insight into how emotional wounds may manifest energetically.
11. Healthy Boundaries: The Empath’s Medicine
Boundaries are not walls. Think of them as automatic sliding doors — opening to allow love in and out through reciprocal giving and receiving, and closing to keep harm out. The challenging part is knowing when to open them and who to open them for. You learn this by repairing and calming your nervous system, so it can guide you with clarity instead of fear.
Find your baseline - a sense of your own energy - and learn to trust your body and nervous system around certain people. Trust your intuition, your body’s signals, and how you feel, rather than what people say. This is discernment
Healthy boundaries look like:
saying no without guilt
refusing to explain your worth
protecting your energy
limiting access to your energy
choosing peace over chaos
listening to your intuition
honouring your body’s signals
Your nervous system thrives when you choose environments and people that feel safe, supportive and loved.
12. You Can Heal
If you recognise yourself in this story, know this:
You are not broken. You are not “too sensitive.” You are not imagining it. Your body has been responding to emotional harm for a long time.
Healing begins when you:
understand the pattern
honour your sensitivity
reclaim your energy
cut cords with harmful people
restore your nervous system
rebuild your sense of self worth
choose relationships that nourish you
Your sensitivity and compassion are not a burden - it is your gift. Compassion is what makes us human and evolves our soul, our consciousness.
And so, I thank every person who mistreated, harmed, abused, manipulated, controlled or deceived me. Their behaviour became my greatest teacher. Through them, I learned the most valuable lessons of all: to love myself, to trust my body & intuition, to show compassion, to forgive, to break harmful cycles, reprogram my way of thinking and behaving and to believe in myself again. We are love. We have simply forgotten and abandoned ourselves along the way.
Some of us are here to break these karmic patterns within our families - ancestral cycles of abuse, manipulation, suppression and emotional neglect. Not to repeat them, but to recognise that they are not normal, not healthy and not the best way forward. We have a choice to bring more harmony, peace and love into our own lives and into the lives of the generations that follow.
Love is the key. Love does heal. I always knew this. What I truly needed was to learn how to love myself. Self‑love.
This is the path of self‑healing. It starts with us.
